You can rent a car in Malta with a debit card for both payment and the security deposit. A credit card is not required, but your card must meet the conditions for the selected rental.

Accepted cards and cardholder requirements

Our rental terms accept Visa and Mastercard credit or debit cards. Bring the physical card and know your PIN. The card should be in the hirer’s name. If you want to use another person’s card, contact us before booking: our terms require that cardholder to be present and added as an extra driver.

Cash and American Express are not accepted. Maestro is accepted for payment only, not as the deposit guarantee. Ask us to confirm acceptance before relying on a prepaid, virtual or other card type.

How much is the security deposit?

The deposit depends on your chosen vehicle and rental conditions. Check the amount shown for your selected car and confirm it with us before booking. Ensure you have enough available funds for the rental payment and the deposit.

A debit-card rental is not a no-deposit rental. The security deposit is separate from the rental price. Your insurance excess is the amount you may be responsible for under the insurance conditions; check it separately from the deposit.

How the card hold works

A pre-authorisation temporarily reduces the funds you can use. The time at which your available balance is restored depends on the issuing bank and the applicable rental conditions. Do not assume the funds become available immediately when you return the car. Keep your rental and return documents and contact us with your booking reference if you need help checking a hold.

  • The exact deposit for the vehicle and any optional protection selected.
  • Your card type, cardholder name and chip-and-PIN capability.
  • The total rental cost and any airport, out-of-hours or optional-extra charges.
  • Insurance excess, exclusions, fuel policy and cancellation conditions.
  • Driver-age and driving-licence requirements.
